Ju-jutsu, literally the "way of softness or yielding", traditionally included all the Japanese empty-handed fighting techniques—strikes and kicks, and as well as joint locks and throws.

Aikido, judo, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu all originated from ju-jutsu.
